How do you learn the TI-84 Plus CE quickly?

Learn the few skills that come back in almost every problem, in this order: the 2nd and alpha keys, the mode settings, graphing, and the CALC menu for zeros, extrema and intersections. Practice each step with real keystrokes on your own calculator. The TI-84 Plus CE Guidebook follows exactly this path with screenshots and pictures of the real keys.

What is the fastest way to learn the TI-84 Plus CE?

Most students learn the calculator one homework problem at a time. That works, but it is slow. Learn the recurring skills once, in this order:

  1. Keys and menus: 2nd, alpha, leaving a menu and finding a lost command.
  2. Mode settings: set them once so results look the way your teacher expects.
  3. Graphing: the Y= editor, a sensible window and the table.
  4. Analyzing graphs: zeros, minimums, maximums and intersections from the CALC menu.
  5. Equations and statistics: the intersect method, the Equation Solver, lists, 1-Var Stats and regressions.

The TI-84 Plus CE Guidebook uses the same order. Its chapters are First Steps, Graphing Basics, Analyzing Functions, Solve Equations, Integral Calculus, Matrices, Statistics & Probability and The Apps Menu.

How do the 2nd and alpha keys work?

The blue label above a key is its second function: press 2nd, then the key. The green letter needs alpha first. For several letters in a row, press 2nd alpha to turn on Alpha-Lock, and alpha again to turn it off.

  • Leave any menu: 2nd mode (QUIT) returns to the home screen.
  • Erase the entry line: clear. Inside a menu it usually takes you back one step.
  • Insert instead of overwrite: 2nd del (INS).
  • Reuse the last calculation: 2nd enter (ENTRY) pastes your most recent entry back into the entry line. Press it again to go one entry further back.
  • Find any command: 2nd 0 (CATALOG) lists every command alphabetically. Press a letter key to jump, then enter to paste.

Watch the cursor. An arrow means 2nd is armed, a block with an A means alpha is armed. If the calculator suddenly types letters instead of numbers, press alpha once to get out.

Which mode settings should I choose?

Press mode. For high school math, select the settings on the left side and switch STAT DIAGNOSTICS to ON, so r and r² appear after a regression. Turn STAT WIZARDS on as well: they open an input form for commands such as regressions, so you do not have to remember the order of the arguments.

The row that costs the most points is RADIAN or DEGREE. The gray status bar at the top of the screen always shows the active angle mode, so glance at it before every trigonometry problem.

How do I graph a function on the TI-84 Plus CE?

  1. Press y= to open the Y= editor.
  2. Type the function next to Y1. The variable X comes from the X,T,θ,n key.
  3. Press graph.
  4. If you see nothing useful, press zoom › ZStandard (x and y from −10 to 10), or set Xmin, Xmax, Ymin and Ymax yourself in window.
  5. Press 2nd graph (TABLE) for a table of values. 2nd window (TBLSET) sets the start value and the step size.

The CE gives every function its own color (Y1 blue, Y2 red and so on), so you always know which curve is which. To hide a function without deleting it, move the cursor onto its equals sign in y= and press enter.

How do I find zeros, maximums and intersections?

Most questions about a graph are answered by one menu. With the graph on the screen, press 2nd trace (CALC). It offers 1: value, 2: zero, 3: minimum, 4: maximum, 5: intersect, 6: dy/dx and 7: ∫f(x)dx.

Example: find a zero

  1. Press 2nd trace (CALC) › 2: zero.
  2. At Left Bound?, move the cursor with ◄ ► to a point left of the zero and press enter. You can also type an x-value.
  3. At Right Bound?, move to a point right of the zero and press enter.
  4. At Guess?, press enter. The zero appears at the bottom of the screen.

Each run finds exactly one zero, the one between your bounds, so a parabola with two zeros needs two runs. Minimum and maximum work the same way. If you get ERR: NO SIGN CHNG, your bounds do not enclose a crossing.

For an intersection, choose 5: intersect, confirm the first and the second curve with enter, then move near the crossing and press enter for the guess.

How do I solve an equation?

The graphical method works for any equation, however messy. Enter the left side as Y1 and the right side as Y2, then use 2nd trace (CALC) › 5: intersect. Every intersection is one solution, so widen the window if you expect more than you see.

For a single solution you can also use the Equation Solver. Press math ▲ enter, type the left side into E1 and the right side into E2 (for example 2(X+1) and 6X+0.5), and confirm with enter. Enter a guess for X, keep the cursor on the X line and press alpha enter (SOLVE).

How do I run statistics on the TI-84 Plus CE?

  1. Press stat › 1: Edit… and type your data into L1, pressing enter after each value.
  2. Press stat ► to open the CALC tab and choose 1: 1-Var Stats.
  3. Choose your list (2nd stat shows all lists), highlight Calculate and press enter.

You get the mean, the sample and population standard deviation, the five-number summary and more. Regressions such as LinReg, QuadReg and ExpReg sit in the same CALC tab. Paste Y1 into the Store RegEQ field with alpha trace (F4), and the fitted equation is ready to graph.

Probability distributions such as normalcdf and invNorm are under 2nd vars (DISTR).

Which beginner mistakes cost the most points?

  • The subtraction key for a negative number. Negative numbers need the negation key (-). Using − instead is the most common cause of ERR: SYNTAX.
  • A negative base without parentheses. −2² returns −4, because the calculator squares 2 first. Type (−2)² instead.
  • The wrong angle mode. If sin(30) does not return 0.5, the status bar says RADIAN.
  • An impossible window. ERR: WINDOW RANGE usually means Xmin is not smaller than Xmax, or Ymin not smaller than Ymax.
  • A forgotten stat plot. ERR: INVALID DIM while graphing often comes from a stat plot that points to an empty list. Turn plots off with 2nd y= (STAT PLOT) › 4: PlotsOff.
  • A forgotten graphing mode. If your functions seem to have vanished from y=, the calculator is still in parametric, polar or sequence mode. Switch back to FUNCTION in mode.

Does the TI-84 Plus CE Python work the same way?

Yes. Every key, menu and command in this article is identical on the CE Python. That model adds a Python app, which you open from apps or with prgm.

The app has three screens: the File Manager (HELLO, GRAPH and LINREGR come preinstalled), the Editor for writing code, and the Shell with its >>> prompt for running it. If you own the regular CE, you miss nothing from this learning path.

Which guidebook and reference card go with the TI-84 Plus CE?

The TI-84 Plus CE Guidebook by Marco Wenisch is intended for use with the TI-84 Plus CE, the TI-84 Plus CE Python and the TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition. It is available as a paperback and for Kindle.
